Birth chart Gemstones Birthstones Planets

We all know our birthstone (and some of us are more pleased about it than others), which is based on the month you were born, and therefore, also loosely based on the position of the sun on the day you were born. However, if you’ve ever seen your astrological birth chart, you’ll know that each of the eight planets also had a precise position in the solar system, depending on the exact time and place you were born.

Astrologists use the position of each of those planets and the corresponding “houses” they fall in to determine many factors of your livelihood, including your best (and worst!) traits, skill sets, relationships, timing of your various life chapters and more. As a gem enthusiast, you can also use some of these key positions to highlight and stimulate these various areas of your life including your health, love life, overall life goals and beyond with the gems that have represented them since ancient times thanks to Vedic astrology.

Never seen your birth chart before? See which houses each of your planets fall into with some popular, free-of-charge options here and here. You’ll need your birthplace, date and time (if you’re not sure of the exact time, it’s often recommended to use noon as an alternative.)

Venus – Diamond

The only planet named after a female goddess, Venus is known as the planet of love and beauty and represents classically feminine characteristics, including pleasure, luxury, sex and romance. Whichever house Venus falls in suggests not only how one will best win you over and your so-called “weak spot” for love, but also your personal style and taste with everything from your home to your wardrobe (and yes—jewellery!) If you’re looking for a female partner, this house represents the type of person you’ll likely fall for.  You may also feel especially connected to Venus if you’re a Taurus, Libra or Pisces.

Mars – Red Coral

Tap into your passion and your more aggressive side with this fiery, red planet. The position of Mars shows how you deal with others for better or worse! It can also support your fertility and lust for life. The yang to Venus’s yin, Mars is all about male energy, and if you’re looking for a male partner, will show you the type of traits that will likely attract you most. Lean into this energy if you need more drive, motivation, and general passion in your day-to-day life.  You may also feel especially connected to Mars if you’re an Aries or Scorpio.

Moon – Pearl

The position of the Moon in your chart represents your emotions and inner world, i.e. your true self, which not everyone on the outside world gets to see. If you’re a highly physical or outgoing person who would like to have more balance, consider highlighting Moon energy to focus more on your sensitivity and emotional life.  You may also feel especially connected to the Moon if you’re a Cancer.

Jupiter –  Yellow Sapphire

The biggest planet in the solar system, Jupiter is all about amplification! Its position in your chart can suggest the foundation for your overall personal belief system and what you will most likely teach others over your lifetime. It also reveals which areas you'll most excel in in your life with little to no effort. Stimulating this energy can help with growth, expansion and motivation to take more risks. You may also feel especially connected to Jupiter if you’re a Sagittarius or a Pisces.

Mercury –  Emerald

Mercury is the ruler of all things communication and language-based in our chart. Highlighting this energy can help with your overall social life, and the relationships you have with your peers, including coworkers, neighbours, siblings etc. This is the area to focus on if you want to have beneficial interactions with others overall. You may feel especially connected to Mercury if you’re a Gemini or a Virgo.

Saturn – Blue Sapphire

Saturn is the planet that lays down the law! It’s position within your chart often highlights your life’s true path and karma. Saturn’s return throughout your life (every 27 to 30 years) often highlights a major life change, which is often connected to helping you correct course, if needed. Overall, Saturn is all about the #hustle and some of the harder lessons you’re destined to learn, which of course often lead to life’s greatest peaks. You may feel especially connected to Saturn if you’re a Capricorn or an Aquarius.
