Happy Year of the Tiger!
We’re ushering in the year of the Water Tiger, which officially begins February 1st. Read on to see what this new phase could mean for you and how to welcome your best luck this year.
What is the Lunar Calendar and Chinese Zodiac?
The Chinese Calendar is a lunisolar calendar based on the Sun’s position in the sky and the phases of the moon. This ancient calendar dates back to the 14th Century BCE (our current calendar wasn’t introduced until 1582!)
There are twelve zodiac signs celebrated in Chinese astrology, each decided by the year you were born. They include: the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Depending on the year, the zodiac signs also cycle through five elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Wood and Metal. 2022 is the year of the Water Tiger.
What to Expect During the Year of the Tiger
The Year of the Tiger can potentially bring about great change. If you allow it, this will be a year of risk-taking and adventure. After years of buckling down, you’ll find enthusiasm again. Our generosity as a society has the potential to be at an all-time high and social progress feels possible again. With that in mind, consider this the year to finally go after what you want and potentially take the reins on a project which could win you some fanfare. However, while you strive to get ahead, remember to also think of ways you can give back to those around you in order to maintain balance.
Tigers are known for their brave and courageous nature, as well as for their drive and competitiveness. While Tigers are ambitious, they’re also generous with what they have and will always offer a helping hand to others. Some famous Tigers (those born in ’38, ’50, ’62, ’74, ’86, and ’98) include Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Penelope Cruz, and the Queen.
The Tiger is associated with Yang, which is masculine, active energy. Tigers do things their own way and hate being told what to do. Remember to keep your ego in check and roll with the punches and any major shifts with grace. Since this is also the Year of the Water Tiger, water years are often those which allow us to focus on our emotions and ties to others. Overall, this is a year for building stronger family ties, successful teams and projects which can serve as positive creative outlets. Life is short…live to be happy!
How to Be Lucky During the Year of the Tiger
Signs that will be particularly lucky this year are those that are typically compatible with Tigers, including the Horse (born in ’42, ’54, ’66, ’78, ’90, and ’02), Dogs (born in ’46, ’58, ’70, ’82, ’94, and ’06) and Pigs (born in ’47, ’59, ’71, ’83, ’95, and ’07).
Decorating with and wearing red and gold for New Year’s Eve on January 31st is traditionally auspicious for ushering in great luck for the year. There are also lucky colours that are forecasted to have positive Feng Shui which can bring great luck to all signs. This year, they are aquatic-like green and blue, which reflect 2022’s water energy, and can also help keep the masculinity of the Tiger in check. Of course, Aquamarines, Blue Sapphires, and Emeralds are all lucky gemstones to wear this year to help you make the most of the Year of the Tiger! To celebrate the New Year, look to the vitality and passion of Rubies and Yellow Gold to mark the occasion especially.
